Travel Books

Do you share Julie's passion for travel? This reading list will enrich your life, whether you're at home or on the road!

trekking northern thailand

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the two main cities in the north and both are easily accessible by air from Bangkok.

If you have the time however, you'll find Bangkok was worth the visit.

TRAVEL TIP:

It can get pretty hot and humid from March through May, so the best time to go is between November and February.

Thailand Culture

Two very different cultures exist side by side in Thailand; "Classic Thai", which can best be described as the polite, fun loving nature of the Thai people and the ceremony and grace that permeates their daily life, and the Hill Tribe cultures of the North.

Their settlements are found throughout the mountainous areas of southern China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand, and their cultures are distinctive and relatively unchanged.

There are many small, picturesque rivers in Northern Thailand that connect rural villages and provide a real jungle adventure for travelers.

Rafting in Thailand

After breakfast, our hosts took us down to the river where our simple bamboo rafts were being constructed. We were each given a long bamboo pole and brief instructions on steering, while our backpacks were loaded onto the "luggage rack" in the middle of the raft.

I was amazed at the stability of these floating platforms, as long as we didn't ram into anything, I remained comfortably on my feet!

Along the way we passed many graveyards where used rafts had been abandoned at the end of their journey.

I was relieved to learn that the old bamboo is dried out and used to build houses or burned for cooking and heating.
