Kayaking Tropical Thailand
![]() The limestone cliffs of southern Thailand make this a paradise for kayakers. Julie & Mark team up with one of the first eco-tourism companies in Asia to explore the aquamarine waters of Phang Na Bay on kayaks.
It's dazzling caves, coves and inland lagoons are home to many colorful bird species, monkeys and exotic sea life. In the island's towering hongs, or caves, Mark & Julie meet the local "hunters" who search for highly prized nests that are sold to make the notorious (and bizarre sounding!) Chinese aphrodisiac "birds nest soup".
They explore the twisted maze of mangroves in kayaks, camp on pristine, deserted beaches and enjoying tropical sunsets with a diverse group of adventurers.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to THAILAND
*TSUNAMI UPDATE : The Phuket area is ready to welcome visitors to it's gorgeous beaches, and the local economy is in desperate need of your help. Now is the time to go to Southern Thailand!
Please be aware, there are many companies running kayaking tours in Phang Na Bay, but they are not all "eco-friendly". You may spend a little more with Sea Canoe, but it is well worth it.
This company is one of the few who takes responsibility for the environment and the welfare of the local people. As travelers, we all must make responsible choices to protect these remaining special places on our earth, and hold ourselves and the tour operators accountable. Your money, spent with the right companies, sends a clear message to encourage protection of the environment and local people.
For the kayaking trip itineraries and detailed descriptions you can go directly to the JohnGray-SeaCanoe.com site, or book through Myths and Mountains, same price.
Thailand Culture
![]() Two very different cultures exist side by side in Thailand; "Classic Thai", which can best be described as the polite, fun loving nature of the Thai people and the ceremony and grace that permeates their daily life, and the Hill Tribe cultures of the North.
Their settlements are found throughout the mountainous areas of southern China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand, and their cultures are distinctive and relatively unchanged.
Thailand People
![]() The majority of these ethnic people belong to one of the following tribal groups; Lisu, Lahu, Akha, Karen, Mien and Mong.
After spending a few days in Northern Thailand you will be able to identify members of the various groups by their distinctive costumes and colors.
Their society is governed by ancient customs which are increasingly threatened as the modern world encroaches.
As more and more travelers venture further off the beaten path, we can't help but impact these traditional cultures, but, if we each take the time to share something of ourselves, not just our money, hopefully, in the end, the impact is positive.
