Bangkok Bearings![]() Our adventure jumps off from Bangkok..; This city is one of the easiest and cheapest places to begin a trip to Asia.
If you do not enjoy large, foreign cities, you will want to leave for the Northern Provinces ASAP.
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the two main cities in the north and both are easily accessible by air from Bangkok.
If you have the time however, you'll find Bangkok was worth the visit.
TRAVEL TIP:It can get pretty hot and humid from March through May, so the best time to go is between November and February.
TRAVEL TIP:In my opinion, it is not worth taking a cab into Bangkok for just one night.
If your flight arrives late in the day, I would suggest getting a room at the Amari Airport Hotel. It's connected to the airport by a skywalk, has great restaurants and nice rooms - I wish every Airport offered such convenient features. Enjoy a relaxing dinner, recover a bit from your jet lag and schedule a low stress morning departure to Chiang Mai.
More Around Bangkok![]() In this episode, the "Passport to Adventure" crew visits one of Asia's most enchanting countries.
Personally, I enjoy Bangkok. It is HUGE and can be overwhelming, so you need to make sure you have enough time to enjoy it - from 3 to 6 days.
The good news is that hotels rates are very reasonable. My favorites are the Siam City, if you like to be close to everything, or for a bit more money you can stay at the Marriott Royal Garden Resort, an oasis on the river. It is a little further out, but you can get anywhere by taxi or river "express" boats.
The city is brimming with gilded temples, strange smelling markets and great shopping and eating on every street corner.
I have often wandered alone through many areas of Bangkok and I have never felt at all threatened. It is a big city, so be alert; but in general, women are not harassed and can feel very safe in this Buddhist country.
