Sailing the Grenadine Islands, Caribbean

Grenadine Island Sloop

On a sleek, 64 foot sloop Julie & Mark get a feel for life on the open sea and a taste of the exotic West Indies.

On St. Lucia, the Ladera Resort, one of the Caribbean's most spectacular hideaways, lies nestled in the jungle covered hillside of the island's trademark Pitons - striking peaks that tower over beautiful beaches and a smoldering caldera, where mineral rich water boils to the earths surface.

After touring St. Lucia, Mark & Julie take a short flight south to begin their windward adventure. They sail north to idyllic snorkeling and diving in the Tobago Keys then on to the mist shrouded rim of an active volcano on Saint Vincent. On the island of Mustique, they ride horses on the beach before setting sail for a historic whaling port on the island of Bequai.

From learning to handle the helm and sails to enjoying the nightly sunset spectacle, Mark & Julie uncover the mystique that surrounds the life of those adventurous few who see the world from their floating home.

TIPS for TRAVELERS to THE WEST INDIES

I would love to recommend the lovely "Orient Express", but unfortunately it has retired to private use.

I believe the big guys, Sunsail and Moorings have large fleets available for charter in the Grenadines, and throughout the Caribbean.

I would recommend paying for a crew, as opposed to "bareboating" - having someone to cook, clean and most of all, captain the boat, leaves you to just enjoy the trip!

In addition to sailing skills, the captains are full of useful information, like where to find the most protected anchorages, the best restaurants and where to get laundry done!

All important stuff!
