A guided tour of the Manuel Antonio preserve offers important lessons in biodiversity and the importance of saving the world's rain forests.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to COSTA RICA
Costa Rica is an good 'beginner' destination for families wanting to try foreign travel. There are now MANY Americans with second homes in Costa Rica, English is spoken most everywhere and the American dollar is widely accepted.
If you have children that like creatures, they will be in heaven here - lots of big, "gross" bugs! (not to mention iguanas, lizards, monkeys, etc.) There is also an active volcano and hot springs for soaking up the view of an eruption!
If you are seasoned travelers, then Costa Rica may be a bit too tame for you, precisely because it is so comfortable for Americans. You can of course always get off the beaten path and find untouristed areas.
It is a terrific destination for those interested in biology, conservation of rainforests, or surfing, but the influence of indigenous cultures is much less pronounces than in other Central & South American destinations. There have been no large archeological sites found in Costa Rica.
