Camel Safari in the Thar Desert

A Camel Safari in the Thar Desert

Camel Safari
In this episode Julie ventures into one of the world's harshest environments to camp on the dunes and meet the tribal people that make the desert their home. From the golden city of Jaisalmer, camel caravans take modern day explorers for romantic excursions into the Thar Desert.

Julie gallops through the dunes with a descendant of the ancient Rajput warriors and visits India's largest desert festival to mingle with the thousands of people and animals that assemble in Pushkar each year.

After a week of 'more than you ever needed to know about Camels', she makes the migration to one of India's most famous bird sanctuaries for a leisurely tour on bikes and boats. Then it's off to Agra for a peek beyond the walls of India's most enduring symbol, the Taj Mahal.

TIPS for TRAVELERS to RAJASTHAN, INDIA

Yes, it is as exotic as it sounds! The highlight of this trip is spending the night under the stars in the desert. You can make your way to the city of Jaisalmer and sign up for a very inexpensive, basic safari, which will include a camel with a lightly padded (i.e. hard!) saddle, a guide, and simple sleeping conditions & meals.

If you want a more luxurious desert experience, sign up for a first class safari, which will cost a bit more, but you will enjoy delicious food and comfortable saddles and tents! It you want to be sure things are "up to par", you will be better off signing up through a tour operator here in the States. See my recommendation below...

The Pushkar Camel Festival is a popular tourist event, so accommodations can be very difficult to get. You will need to arrange your trip well in advance, and again, you will probably want to use a tour operator here in the U.S.

If you are an adventurer with a backpack - the orange sea of tents set up each year for the festival overflow will probably be just right for you - simple cots, bathroom tents with toilets and showers, etc. Beware, even these fill up! Feel free to email me with specific questions!
